Epson International Pano Awards

Recently I entered 6 images into the Epson Pano Awards. Up against some amazing landscape photographers, I was surprised to see that three came back with bronze, and one with sliver!

A Snapshot of The Barcoo

Here’s a short clip I’ve put together from 5D MkII video and time lapse. The Barcoo shire is an area in western Queensland where you’ll find plenty of incredible scenery and very few people! Being a photographer dealing with video files and time lapse seems to be frustrating, but rewarding! This was a lot of fun to shoot, but definitely an eye opener into the epic world of time lapse and HD video. Click here to watch HD in Vimeo.

Landscape 500 Competition – top ten

Recently I entered a collection of images into the Landscape 500 photography competition. This image from Longreach in outback Qld managed to score 10th place! There were some unbelievable photographs chosen in the top 10, congratulations to Jamie Nicolaou for his stunning Pilbara lightning shot which won the competition. Check it out here. Five other images I had entered scored silver, and three bronze.

For me this image really captures the feel of the stunning wide open spaces that can be found in Western Qld. Anywhere from Longreach to Birdsville scenes like this are a common sight – I hope it inspires you to get out there and experience some of the amazing scenes we have on our doorstep!

Shearing Shed, Longreach Qld

I love photographing old sheds, rusted out trucks and crumbling houses – anything that’s been abandoned and falling to bits. There was something eerie about this place, making it even more exciting to photograph. Maybe 50 years ago this place would have been thriving when the wool industry was booming – not these days. A real icon of Queensland’s outback history I reckon.

Working on the Sky

With cloudy flat skies, comes the need to think outside the square! Stuck with a week of shooting under think cloud cover in western Queensland, I started experimenting with the automatic exsposure bracketing, then blending manually in Photoshop. A few samples here- 28 facebookers voted the top image, 12 preferred bottom!

Outback Panos

Well, stitching panoramas is a new thing for me. Up until now it’s possible I was just too lazy, or didn’t have the right equipment. So here are the results of 4000 k’s on the road in western Qld, experimenting with the 5D2 and Nodal Ninja head. Shooting panoramas, you actually have to think about what your doing, no more point and shoot style! As always, feedback is appreciated!

More from the West

A few more highlights here from my recent trip to the Barcoo. Gotta love those outback skies – some stunning clouds and really vibrant sunsets. Comments and critique are appreciated!

Brooding Storm | Longreach Qld

I’m always on the hunt for an image like this, and you’ve got to drive a fair distance to find a spot where the view is un-hindered for as far as you can see! So I guess you’d say I was fairly excited when we pulled up here with a storm brewing to the north. Had a few minutes where the sun decided to sneek through, and it just went pop!

The Barcoo

Finally some new images to work with! I’ve just returned from a week in Western Queensland checking out places like Windorah, Jundah & Longreach. It was great to photograph some huge wide open spaces, and meet some classic characters too. If you can ever get out there I recommend it, only 14 hours drive from Brisbane… Here’s a couple of quick snaps, but stay tuned for more to come soon!
